About Me
Story and philosophy
Hello, I’m Sung
London based creative
Born and raised in a liberal and entrepreneurial household in Hong Kong. As a mathematics and physics enthusiast growing up, my sense of exploration has always been encouraged (a proud Asian stereotype with my own will) and carried on in adulthood.
There’s a pivotal moment on Aug 5th, 2005 that brought the light to the dawn of my artistic journey. Jane Zhang was introduced to me from the popular Chinese TV show “Super Voice Girls”.
Surrounded and influenced by the community who shares the same admiration of Jane. I found great interest in western music and literature (Fun fact Jane named herself after Jane Austen the novelist). Meanwhile I picked up writing and musical instruments, although not much success on the latter but it didn't stop me here.
Two years later, I channelled my attention and passion for music into photography after realising that people get to stay closer to the stage if owning a proper DSLR. Ever since that the idea of considering the camera as a method of approach has been deeply embedded.

The foresight and witnessing of a star who was born from the beginning gained me the confidence and taste in identifying talents in others, such similar cases as photographing Hong Kong singer-songwriter G.E.M. in her early career and Lindsey Pavao who is known from The Voice Season 2.

Stage photography makes up most of my early work. It led to the pursuit of music video and later evolved into filmmaking in Hollywood where I formed the experience of high standard production, stills and portrait photography.

Los Angeles gathers the most aspirant and creative minds from all around the world as well as countless great opportunities. I had the honour to work with many talented individuals and be involved with some of the high profile ones like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and productions also publication from his org HitRecord.

Drew by the creative souls of many, which since then my works have been portrait oriented. The tool has progressed into an instrument to discover and appreciate the idea and potential behind the subject from simply approaching.

During the stay in LA, great friendship and partnership was also found with Kevin Maxwell (awarded filmmaker) and Cristiano Cardoso (founder of Camera1). We established Shadow Play Media based only blocks away from the famous Mulholland Drive, Encino also later on a studio loft in DTLA and set foot in the world of commercial production. Such collaboration has lasted over a decade and still continues.

In a late 2014 home visit, I had the opportunity to meet with legendary screenwriter Wei Lu who is known from Farewell My Concubine (1993) and To Live (1994), both to be considered the milestones in modern cinema of China and received multiple international awards such as Grand Prize from Cannes Film Fest, Best Foreign Language Film from Oscar and BAFTA.
This meeting led to my returning to Hong Kong in the future and subsequent participation for the early pre-production and film business deployment of his feature trilogy - Kiss of the Dragon, White Deer Plain and Weave A Period Time. These three epic dramas seamlessly underline the entire 20th-century China.

Influenced by Wei Lu, I was also shaping and researching for my own epic feature Kowloon Walled City, meanwhile kick started the biopic of Shawn Sung, Taiwanese rapper, lyricist and pioneer of Chinese hip-hop who passed away in his prime in Los Angeles.
Over and after the course of the trilogy project. I found myself making music videos occasionally, often bouncing around commercial production and photography.
